A Year with 52 Black Artists & Creators Guided Journal
A 52-week journey through form, authorship, survival, and the long struggle for visibility
Black artistic production has never existed outside pressure — and it has never been only a reaction to it.
This guided journal traces 52 weeks with artists and creators from across the African diaspora, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, film, music, design, architecture, craft, and emerging media. Over the year, you’re invited to look beyond surface recognition and into the conditions that shape what gets made, what gets seen, and what gets remembered.
This is not a “corrective appendix” to a canon.
It’s a structured year of attention to how artistic authority is constructed, withheld, negotiated, and reclaimed — and how visual language becomes a site of endurance, critique, joy, refusal, and future-building.
How Each Week Unfolds
Each week follows a calm, repeatable three-part rhythm:
1) A visual opening
A full-page image sets the tone and gives you a quiet moment to look first.
2) A guided feature chapter
A focused story introduces the week’s figure and context, supported by:
-
Light & Space notes (how atmosphere and meaning are built)
-
Look Closer prompts (what to notice, what to question)
-
Journal & Reflection questions (to connect themes to your own thinking)
3) A dedicated notes page
A clean, typeable page for your own reflections — building a personal archive across the year.
The Journey Across the Year
The 52 weeks are organised into four coherent arcs that make the progression feel intentional:
-
Making Under Constraint — early visibility, limited access, alternative routes into practice, and innovation shaped by restriction
-
Mastery & Subversion — dominant forms learned, mastered, bent, and repurposed to carry unfamiliar truths
-
Body, Memory & Collective Experience — visibility as risk, intimacy as agency, and memory as unresolved inheritance
-
Expansion & New Systems — practices that redesign what “art” can be: installation, digital work, collective authorship, and art as infrastructure
