Sale price£29.99

A Year with George Gershwin: A Weekly Journal Inspired by Music, Ambition, Broadway & the American Sound

Spend a year exploring George Gershwin through 52 moments of music, family, ambition, collaboration, theatre, experiment and restless creativity. From a Russian-Jewish household in Brooklyn and the song-plugging rooms of Tin Pan Alley to Rhapsody in Blue, Broadway, Paris, Porgy and Bess and Hollywood, the journey follows a composer who continually moved between popular entertainment and the concert hall while helping shape a distinctly modern American sound.

Across 52 weekly experiences, the journey unfolds through four distinct sections:

Section I — Brooklyn, Tin Pan Alley & the First Taste of Success
Explore Gershwin’s immigrant family world, discovery of the piano, early training, song-plugging apprenticeship, private study, Swanee, collaboration with Ira and the fast-moving world of Broadway as musical instinct is sharpened by commercial pressure and public response.

Section II — Rhapsody in Blue, Paris & Concert-Hall Ambition
Follow Gershwin through Rhapsody in Blue, the Concerto in F, Paris, An American in Paris, the Piano Preludes and his continuing search for a musical language capable of holding popular rhythm, urban energy and larger compositional ambition at the same time.

Section III — Broadway, Satire, Cuba & a Changing American Stage
Enter the worlds of Girl Crazy, I Got Rhythm, Of Thee I Sing, Cuban Overture, Hollywood and increasingly ambitious theatre as wit, spectacle, politics, collaboration and cultural borrowing complicate Gershwin’s position inside American popular culture.

Section IV — Porgy and Bess, Hollywood & the Unfinished American Sound
Reflect on Porgy and Bess, its artistic ambition and contested history, late Hollywood work, Gershwin’s final illness and sudden death at thirty-eight, and the complicated musical afterlife in which popular memory, concert prestige and questions of American identity remain intertwined.

Each week combines a full-page visual opening, a substantial listening and reflection essay, recommended listening, focused observation prompts and a dedicated Journal Notes page.
